Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 10 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 999 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,050 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 16 motorists and South Hilo officers seven, according to police. South Kohala, Puna and Hamakua officers arrested one motorist in each district.

There have been 1,040 major accidents this year compared with 995 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, there were 30 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 15 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police said 14 of those fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of alcohol and drugs.
